Antonina Mamzenko - December 30, 2009 - 6:46 am

How fantastic! East Molesey is such a nice area!
If it’s a long way away though (the move I mean), maybe we should consider coffee before that time ;)

Antonina - January 18, 2010 - 5:20 am

There’s so much to see and do at Horniman, and I was using a long zoom for these, so they forgot we were taking pictures :) I was ehxausted and they just wouldn’t want to leave!

Antonina - January 18, 2010 - 5:20 am

Thanks! I’ll be posting more this week – we had a blast!

Alexandra - January 21, 2010 - 3:00 pm

Ohhh god I love it! I want to upgrade!!!!

Antonina - January 21, 2010 - 3:42 pm

Go and get it! Haha! :)

irena - January 25, 2010 - 1:31 am

Hi Antonina
The photos looks great, I like the game with the focus. On our screen the photos are soft, which I agree with you suit the couple, and this as well underlines the big eyes of the girl and I suppose in general suit the baby photos.

Marianne Taylor - January 27, 2010 - 8:23 am

In many ways, were in such a similar situation. :) At least you’re a bit further with the moving thing, good luck with all that!

Antonina - January 27, 2010 - 8:26 am

I may be a bit further wit the move, but you’re miles ahead of me in terms of your photography. I hope it won’t take me long to catch up, but it is so unpredictable. Can only do the best I can and hope for the best!

Antonina - January 27, 2010 - 8:47 am

Irena, I can’t wait until you guys come back to Europe and I get to photograph you with Ateo! :)

Karie - January 27, 2010 - 10:57 am

I admire you because you’re approachably human. And knowing your past, and that you’re passionate and reaching out, is fantastic. You’ll go far!

And one thing for sure is true: You must keep on doing what you’re doing, because to sit stagnant would be an unfulfilling life! And your work is beautiful…

Best wishes for a great evening & rest of week,

Antonina - January 27, 2010 - 11:13 am

Thank you so much Karie for your kind words… It’s really inspiring to be able to inspire others when you yourself look for inspiration. Good luck with your photography too!

Jen - January 28, 2010 - 7:12 am

Great to learn more about you Antonina. I am impressed with everything you have done so far! I can identify with trying to find the right niche …I have tried lots of different things too and would recommend it to anyone…it’s the only way you learn what you like (and don’t!). Fantastic to hear about your photography … congratulations!

Jen x

Antonina - January 28, 2010 - 7:26 am

Hey Jen, Thanks for your comment. Now you know why I don’t need to take FCC trains every day anymore ;)
I totally agree with you – you gotta try to find it. Very rarely do people find their thing after the very first attempt. But most stick with it because you’re considered a failure if you want to try again.
I know how scary and difficult it is to start again when you’re nearing 30, or 40, or whatever that’s over 20 or so! But it’s gotta be done if you’re no longer happy!

Seb - February 2, 2010 - 1:47 pm

Very cool pics, great light. I love the one with the little cars and the last one.

Antonina - February 2, 2010 - 2:00 pm

Thanks Seb. The ones you mentioned are actually my favourites too – when taken separately! : ) I love how the rest of the pictures really tell the story though.
(PS I’ve edited the comment so it now says what I meant to say first time! ; ))

evi - February 2, 2010 - 3:28 pm

We would like to thank you very much for making us feel so special. It was a unique experience with a great result. We love every foto you took. We look forward to decorating our new house with your works…

Hi Despina! Welcome to the blog and thank you! :) I’d love to come to Greece! The backdrop would be stunning for family portraits!

Alexandra - February 7, 2010 - 6:02 am

These are incredible! I love them :) :)

Antonina - February 7, 2010 - 8:01 am

Oh thanks Alex! :)

Karie - February 8, 2010 - 9:27 am

Oh my goodness, Antonina, these are fantastic! Despite horrible weather (which I was a bit sad about!) you caught their personalities beautifully.

The one at the top with T in the mud is definitely my favourite, but after that, I love them all and thank you so much for shooting us! It was a fun day to remember!

I also commend you on your “from the hip” shot which turned out beautifully.

Yes, the boys are still mentioning Antonina and her camera, so who knows?! :) I can also say that you’ve again inspired me to get out my own a little bit more often.

Many thanks again,

Antonina - February 8, 2010 - 9:48 am

Thanks Karie! It means so much to get this sort of feedback when I know you know your way with the camera too! :)
I really enjoyed my day with you – hopefully when the nasty weather is gone we can finally spend some more time outside and get some more shots like the top one!

Alexandra - February 8, 2010 - 10:06 am

Beautiful work! My favorites are the ones of them reading together :) so precious!

Ali Hale - February 8, 2010 - 10:16 am

Aww, what a cute pic of you — I’m sure you were justly proud of those drawings!

I know I’ve said it over coffee and via email, but just wanted to say again good luck! Your photos are stunningly gorgeous (especially the ones of kids … I’m a sucker for cuties!) and I hope you go a very very long way in the world of professional photography. :-)

Antonina - February 8, 2010 - 10:33 am

Thanks Ali for your kind words and good wishes!
I love kids – and they are also so much easier to photograph, as they are very natural and not self-aware at all. You just play with them, and click-click-click you get great pictures :)

Antonina - February 8, 2010 - 10:37 am

Thanks Alex! :)

[...] I have decided to cheat ; ) and post a link to something I finished writing last night: the Portrait Photography: What to Wear Guide. It is in no way an ultimate resource, or something only I know. For the most part, it just common [...]

Alexia Jacquot - February 10, 2010 - 4:25 am

Hi Antonina,

Fantastic guidelines and brilliant advice!

Regarding patterns, just as you explained, smaller prints will look a little fuzzy on the photos, so if the subject is really keen to wear prints it is best to go for a larger scale – as the beautiful photo illustrating the subject demontrates it perfectly.

As for accessories (or clothing for that matter), as image consultant, my advice would be to keep them simple and classic if possible, the reason being, anything too on-trend will quickly become outdated!

Happy shooting :-)

Antonina - February 10, 2010 - 6:35 am

Thanks for your input, Alexia :) I agree with you on simple and classic, and not too trendy. Especially so if you’re planning to invest in wall art – you don’t want to be changing your artwork every time trends change! Or maybe you do, who knows ;)

Alexandra Uzdin - February 11, 2010 - 4:07 am

Alexandra - May 29, 2010 - 5:55 am

Antonina, you are so right. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Photographing people actually involved in an activity or doing something creates some of the most beautiful photographs because they’re real. I love these photos!

Sarah - June 1, 2010 - 11:21 am

Love the close-up of Dasha holding the split fruit & the last shot of Dasha’s feet! The story behind of how ye both hooked up only adds to the imagery. Regards S;-)

Antonina, I’ve been thinking about the importance of documentation lately – of the day to day activities and of everyday life. This perfectly captures it, and I’d like to say that these photos will mean so much more to them in a few years time than the typical and traditional “smile and say cheese” family photos. Beautifully captured!

Antonina - June 11, 2010 - 7:13 am

Dominique - June 11, 2010 - 1:18 pm

What a fantastic idea, I love it. Great storytelling and some really funny shots too! x

Mandy Lehto - June 12, 2010 - 11:12 am

This was a great experience. And because it was totally undirected, not staged or orchestrated in any way, it really feels like ‘us’. Capturing things as they are, not made up, over-dressed, starchy or posed, is something that escapes our documentation of daily life. This was a truly amazing, easy and authentic experience. It’s amazing how something like this can teach you so much about yourself, your style etc… even from just looking at everyone’s photos of the same girls in different scenarios just highlights to me even more that we’re all different, even though we were photographing the same thing. I love your natural and honest style of shooting, and I truly believe that you will be a huge success. Antonina, you’re so quick with the posting! I’m still trying to choose favorites to edit haha :) . It was so great to finally meet you! You are just as wonderful in person as you are online :) . See you again soon I hope!

Another set of really beautiful photos! I love your work.

Caradiaz Jewellery - July 20, 2010 - 3:33 pm

Hi Antonia,

I do follow you on Twitter but somehow managed to miss the GREAT NEWS! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

You are right, I don’t think anyone is ever prepared for a baby – I wasn’t either. But one piece of advice, if I may: don’t go mad trying to learn everything about it in advance. Many of my friends bought book after book on pregnancy and motherhood and they were disappointed not to find the answers to their problems.

I only bought two books: What to expect when you are expecting? and What to expert in the first year? And they both served me absolutely fine, I actually recommend them. Everything else I learnt from talking to other mums (mostly my NCT group, which I also recommend – well, not mine obviously but whatever your local NCT group is) and sharing tips and experiences with them. It was really helpful as I realised I wasn’t alone when there was some kind of trouble with the baby (feeds, sleep patterns or whatever).

So my biggest recommendation would be meeting other future mums and also new mums once your baby is born. I found socialising really very helpful – I would have gone mad otherwise!

Best of luck with the pregnancy & I look forward to your tweets on bump’s growth, etc.

Funmi Omotade-Tan - July 22, 2010 - 2:42 pm

Kirsten Mavric Photo - February 5, 2011 - 9:33 am

Great post, Antonina. I love my 50mm 1.4 and use it almost constantly. I think it’s the wide depth of field I’m drawn to.

Louisa Rose - February 5, 2011 - 10:28 am

Loved this post. So interesting! My fave lens is my 50mm 1.8, saving for the 1.4 but totally get what your saying when photographing children with it. Could you share where you rent your equipment from? Thanks again :)

Vicki Knights - February 5, 2011 - 11:08 am

Interesting post. I love hearing what’s in other peoples camera bags! It’s funny how we’re all different. I love my primes andonly use zooms when I have to. I rented the 70-200 but just couldn’t get along with it, but I know so many photogs love it! Thanks for sharing this.

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 12:48 pm

Depending on the situation, I rent from two places, one is – great when you need a piece of equipment for a week or so, as they are much cheaper than other places, and they also deliver to your door. Or, if I only need something for a weekend, I would go to Calumet – they are more expensive, but they have a weekend deal when you only pay for one day rental if you pick up Fri night and return Mon morning (great for weddings ;) )

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 12:49 pm

I told you before that I just not as smitten by the 50mm as everyone else seems to be! I actually prefer the bokeh and the compressed perspective effect I achieve with 70-200mm at 2.8 and 200mm!

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 12:50 pm

It’s great to see that we are all different, isn’t it? :)

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 12:51 pm

I know – just as I replied to Alex’s comment…. And it just shows that there is no single piece of equipment that’s the answer to all your needs – everyone is different and you need to find what’s right for you!

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 12:53 pm

Of course, you’re a well travelled lady, Kate! I never been to Malawi, but when I first saw those dresses I was so impressed how African but at the same time very modern and European in some way they look (especially the dresses).

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 12:53 pm

Aww thanks Dominique. I’m obsessed with washing lines :)

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 12:53 pm

Thanks Kirsten!

Hannah Beatrice - February 5, 2011 - 1:15 pm

Thanks for this, Antonina, really interesting. I’ve just been using a hired 50mm today for an indoor shoot and was surprised how easy I found working with a prime, as I haven’t used them very much. (The child wasn’t yet crawling though, so I didn’t have the difficulty of having to give chase!)

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 1:31 pm

Yes, I do use 50mm with newborn babies and adults (subjects you can pretty much put where you like them to be), but still prefer the zoom :)

Dominique - February 5, 2011 - 2:50 pm

Great post! I really love my Nikon 85 1.4g for portraits. It gives you that shallow depth of field that makes your subject pop in a similar way the 70-200 2.8 does but without the weight of that massive lens!!

Dominique - February 5, 2011 - 2:52 pm

I think you wold love the 85 then because it gives you much more bokeh than the 50 at the same aperture because of the longer focal length but is just so much lighter to carry around than the 70-200. But like you say, probably not as great for kids though as it’s a prime lens.

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 3:19 pm

Haven’t actually tried the Canon equivalent of 85mm, though I did hear good things about it. But as I said, I think I’m too lazy to really get into the primes! ;)

Antonina - February 5, 2011 - 5:14 pm

Funny thing is I know some people are using primes with kids to a great success! Just not me I guess! ;)

Anonymous - February 6, 2011 - 8:32 pm

Great post. The Canon 50mm f1.4 is a fantastic lens and pound for pound can’t be beat, amazing value for money. A great quality multi purpose lens, especially on a full frame. I tend to shoot with primes most of the time. If i’ve got a lively child subject i just tend to give them a little more room in the frame, 21mpx has plenty of give ;)

A few have mentioned the 85… I’ve owned the 85 f1.8, fabulous quality but at the time my camera was a 350D and it was just too long for me. Next purchase is the 24 f1.4 :) gear is not everything but i can’t wait!

Eddie Judd - February 7, 2011 - 3:06 pm

great post antonina – I definately agree with you that it is whatever you are comfortable with – you have to know your lens well to get great pictures out if it. I tend you use my 85-1.8, 50-1.4 and 70-200L on most shoots. The macro is the next on my list of ‘many things to buy’

Antonina - February 7, 2011 - 7:55 pm

:) I’m a big in-camera cropper, hate to crop photos much afterwards – so my only solution is to try to be as fast as a kid and follow them!

I actually tried 35mm 1.4 and LOVED it. Very very sharp and superb low light performance. Guess more useful for more still subjects though, like landscapes and adults ;)

Antonina - February 7, 2011 - 7:56 pm

I agree. First time I used a macro, the results were pretty poor. I just didn’t know what to do with it. Same with tilt-and-shift. You really have to practice to get the most out of it.

Laurenbythsea - February 7, 2011 - 8:39 pm

steven carter hewson - February 8, 2011 - 1:39 pm

always interesting to see what others have in their camera bag.. I’m a bit of a sucker for primes myself. what’s really good to see is that individual styles span more than just which preset they use in LR… thanks for sharing

Hi Antonina, May I ask you what’s it’s like to live in West/East Molesey area’s. I’m currently living in Chiswick, but looking for properties in Esher area. On the face of it West/East Molesey seems to be a little gem in price comparison to say Esher/Weybridge which I kind of aware of. We are a mid 30′s professional couple thinking of starting a family in next few years, so not looking for exclusive shops say like Richmond etc The closest we have been to the area is Hampton Court. If you have any comments around crime or schooling be greatly appreciated. I know this is not in relation to your work, but I can’t find much on-line information about the area until I stumbled across your website. Many thanks hopefully in advance Martin

Great photo and advice.  It really doesn’t pay to try and bully your subjects into doing what you want.  They won’t look comfortable and you won’t achieve the result you want anyway.  The welly shot is fantastic.  Breaking the ‘rules’ is what makes a picture stand out.  And of course knowing all the rules helps too!  Well done.

Thanks for sharing Antonina! You’ve got a very good point, I also find I get the best shots when the children don’t do what they are told and misbehave a little bit in a playful way. It makes me think of this great quote about photography: “I think the best pictures are often on the edges of any situation, I don’t find photographing the situation nearly as interesting as photographing the edges.”  ~William Albert Allard

The challenge though is to stop the parents from telling the child off and just take a back seat. It is critical for keeping the right mood for the kids during the session but I know as a parent I would also find it very hard not to intervene!

Beautiful Antonina! Such a lucky find. I think that sometimes the happy accidents (photographs not pregnancies) can produce the best portraits.

Alan - June 7, 2011 - 11:06 am

Just love the first photo (the others are fab too :)

Dasha - June 7, 2011 - 3:35 pm

Spontaneous photos are the best! Love that first shot! If daisies don’t come to Antonina, Antonina comes to daisies ;-) x

Anette - June 19, 2011 - 2:20 am

Hi Martin,

we just moved here just a short while ago from very much more up-market Teddington. East Molesey is considerably smarter than West Molesey, but with prices to match. West Molesey is considerably more modest, but it has a really relaxed, friendly, down-to-earth feel to it. Housing stock decreases in quality and price tag, the further West and South you get: there are quite a few 70s maisonette blocks and identikit estates around, but also some nice 1930s houses at very affordable prices. However, across the area people seem genuinely considerate, happy and friendly, and there are quite a lot of outdoorsey things to do. It is very close to the Thames but also to the little river Mole, and as there are so many wide open green spaces (partly due to the reservoirs) it offers some opportunities for wildlife watching literally on your doorstep: you regularly see herons even in residential streets, and how many houses in the London area do you know that still have housemartins nesting in their roofs? (there seems to be quite a few here!)

Regarding shops and cafes, the Walton Road stretch of East Molesey offers a good selection of villagey shops: there is an old-fashioned chemist, quite a few cafes (though none of the Starbucks variety), a couple of restaurants, and dry cleaners, hardware stores and a selection of some slightly more eccentric shops, and as both Kingston and Walton are just 10-15 minutes by car you don’t really need anything else. Free and unrestricted parking is still possible to find even near shops (though obviously slightly more limited directly on the ‘high street’ and right near Hampton Court).

We did research crime rates, and they seem to be quite low across the area (including Walton) with West Molesey being particularly safe. The Tesco’s in East Molesey village on Walton Road seems to be targetted by frequent organised theft (apparently something to do with gaps in their security guard schedules) but this doesn’t seem to affect other shops nor shoppers and appears to be quite an isolated issue.

What also really striking is that there is very little graffiti anywhere
and the many playgrounds, which are very well appointed, are very neatly
kept. There really seems to be still a true sense of community, which is sadly so rare nowadays. As our son still goes to school in Kingston, I can’t speak about
schooling from first hand experience. However, I did google Hurst Park
Primary, which seems to have above average results.

Our original motivation for moving was really the opportunity to live mortgage free (which is more easily achievable in this area than any of its neighbours), but we have since really learnt to appreciate the area in its own right: each time I turn off Hampton Court Bridge onto the river road, which runs along Hurst Meadows a feel myself noticeably relaxing. It’s definitely a wonderful place to bring up children and to live a more relaxed life!

I hope this helps…

Rick - November 17, 2011 - 8:10 pm

Great work – you’ve got a great knack at using whatever scenery you have to hand to add to rather than detract from the shot – not always easy when operating in someone else’s bedroom / front room!
