Yesterday, I’ve taken part in the Mass Photo Gathering at Trafalgar Square in support of the I’m a Photographer, not a Terrorist campaign. This morning, seeing thousands of pictures and good news coverage that followed this campaign, I am hopeful that something may change.
I count myself as lucky – unlike many, I never had to confront the police when taking pictures in public places or was stopped and search, or even arrested (yes, stories of photographers being arrested on suspicion of terrorism are countless). Mainly because I move swiftly when asked to leave by the security guards. However, the number of times I was questioned about my photography, even when clearly taking portraits of people (clients!), is astonishing. I was stopped at St Pancras station, and St Albans station (a guard ran from platform 1 to platform 6 because I was taking pictures of one of the station screens), at Elephant and Castle bus interchange (private property, no pictures), even outside Queen’s House at Greenwich Park, while on a portrait photoshoot!
